Sofa Cushion Fillings Explained: How to Choose the Right Comfort

26 October 2026 · 3 min read · The English Sofa Company

Two sofas can look identical and feel completely different. The difference is what's inside the cushions. Choosing the right cushion interior is one of the most important decisions you'll make, and one of the easiest to get right once you know the options.

Every sofa we make is handmade to order in Manchester, so you choose the filling that suits the way you sit, relax and live. Here's a clear guide to each option, how it feels and how much looking after it needs.

Three questions to ask first

  • How do you like to sit?Do you love to sink in and curl up, or do you prefer an upright, supportive sit? Softer fillings suit loungers; firmer ones suit those who sit up to read or work.
  • How much plumping will you do?Fibre and feather look relaxed but need regular plumping. Foam-based interiors keep their shape with very little effort.
  • Fabric or leather? On leather sofas, the covers are one-sided, so leather cushions are reversible on the inside only. Our Solo Foam interior is designed specifically for leather.

Caring for your cushions

Plump

Fibre and feather interiors bounce back best with a regular plump, ideally after each use.

Turn and flip

Rotating and flipping reversible cushions spreads wear evenly and keeps the seat looking neat.

Rotate

Swap seat cushions between positions now and then, especially on the spot everyone loves most.
